I love to hug trees, sing to my dogs and bunnies who follow me everywhere, take blurry photos from moving vehicles, collect rocks, and spend time with my lovely family.
I almost always burn the bread.
Where do you live? Where have you lived?
After many years of living in the Bay Area, I moved back to the mountains of Northern California where I grew up, to raise my daughter.
What was your favorite illustration assignment?
The spread for Find Fuschia Food Fast from Lilla’s Illustrating Children’s Books course! I loved drawing all of the shop details and bringing Buzzy’s world to life.
What medium do you use?
Messy black ink, watercolor, pencil and anything else that makes a mark.
How do you stay inspired?
Travel, getting out into nature, antique stores, keeping my eyes open!
Where do you buy your art supplies?
Mostly online and when I travel.
Do you work traditionally or digitally?
I work both traditionally and digitally and love to mix the two.
What color combo are you most excited about right now?
I am always falling for a new color combination! At the moment I am loving sienna and terra cotta colors combined with ochres and palest lavender. Pink and tomato red are always a favorite.
Why do you like being an illustrator in 15 words or less?
Creating brings me joy!
If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
If I hadn’t been an illustrator I would have been a paleontologist.
What illustration job would you love to get (your dream job)?
A collection of beautiful ceramic tableware!
Name something you do in your spare time?
Going on hikes to mountain lakes and backpacking with my family.
What’s the strangest work experience you’ve ever had?
A work trip to a sweaty hot warehouse in Fresno, CA to dig through endless bins of vintage clothes for inspiration. Lots of mouse droppings!
What recent book do you recommend for a good read?
I currently have a tall stack of books written by female explorers, adventurers and naturalists.
Where would you like to travel to next?
Spain and Portugal. I would also like to spend more time in South America.

The Black Stallion
Who is your favorite cartoon character?
The Catbus in My Neighbor Totoro.
What is your favorite cheese?
Manchego

Do you wear shoes when you do art?
Most of the time I go barefoot.
What do you listen to while you work?
I have music playing all of the time. I listen to pretty much any genre, but Dark Wave is probably my favorite. Mostly I stream KEXP radio while I work.
What’s your middle name? What do you wish it was?
When I was little I wanted to change my name to Savannah!
If you could eat only one food, what would it be?
Watermelon! I could eat watermelon for days…
How do you stay in shape?
Cycling and hiking when I can.
How don’t you stay in shape?
Pie for breakfast.
