Brian Lambert

I’ve lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest region of the US. It’s beautiful and full of inspiration, especially for someone who loves to draw. Which is something I’ve been doing since I can remember. Usually, I draw cute things — but sometimes I’ll draw things that I think are cool...cutely.

Where do you live?
Spokane, WA

Where have you lived?
Vancouver, WA and Seattle, WA

What medium do you use?
The wonderful medium that is Procreate.

How do you stay inspired?
Walks where I can just think and talk with my wife are my favorite way to get my creative sparks zipping and zapping. I also look at Instagram, I almost exclusively follow other artists so my feed is just one amazing illustration or creation after another.

Where do you buy your art supplies?
Apple, lol.

Do you work traditionally or digitally?
Digitally, started in high school and never looked back.

What color combination are you most excited about right now?
One combination that ends up in almost every illustration I do is orange/yellow and pink. I just love how they blend. And it seems to work at every shade. I’ve yet to be let down by it.

Why do you like being an illustrator in 15 words or less?
I get to research, dream up, and draw pictures all day.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
If it could still be a creative profession, I’d say writer because it fulfils that same creative drive, but if not I’d probably be a history teacher. I love history. If I’m not listening to music while I work, I’m listening to a history podcast.

What illustration job would you love to get (your dream job)?
Absolute top would be a book series deal as an author/illustrator.

Name something you do in your spare time.
If I’m being honest, I have to say video games. Currently been farming every night with three of my friends in Stardew Valley. I have so many pigs. But don’t worry, they just find truffles for me to sell, they’re very well loved!

What’s the strangest work experience you’ve ever had?
I used to work construction installing doors. I accidently installed a handle wrong and locked myself in a room in the basement of a university. The walls were all concrete. I had no signal. Some people say they can still hear my screams for help…

What recent book do you recommend for a good read?
I’m halfway through The Priory of the Orange Tree and, if you’re into fantasy, it is phenomenal.

Where would you like to travel to next?
Planning a mini trip to the Oregon Coast currently, but as far big dream trips go, we really want to go to Portugal.

What podcasts do you like?
Both of Mike Duncan’s works, The History of Rome Podcast and the Revolutions Podcast are amazing; The Pirate History Podcast has been really fun so far; and the BBC’s You’re Dead to Me can be hilarious. As far as non-history podcasts go, I’ve been really enjoying The Always Sunny Podcast. I also listen to a lot of video game podcasts, lol.

What’s your favorite movie?
Either the Grand Budapest Hotel or Ponyo, depending on my mood.

Who is your favorite cartoon character?
Samurai Jack, he’s why I’m an illustrator.

What is your favorite cheese?
I’m lactose intolerant  used to love brie though.

If you could name a nail polish, what would you name it?
William

Do you wear shoes when you do art?
I wear a pair of grey wool Glerup slippers.

What do you listen to while you work?
Spotify told me I listened to something like 9000 different artist last year, so who knows? If I really need to buckle down though I put on Mutemath for those nostalgic jams.

What artist are you reincarnated from?
Definitely Da Vinci.

If you could eat only one food, what would it be?
Tacos. As everyone knows, they’re the perfect food.

How do you stay in shape?
Walks and I have this little peddle thing I use while I play video games on the couch.

How don’t you stay in shape?
Too much couch time.

What is your current favorite font?
Beastly or the all-time classic that is Cooper Black.

How do you take your coffee?
Black, I’m from the PacificNorthwest, lol.

Whom would you like to meet?
Kevin Dart, he’s my color idol.

What question would you most like to be asked?
Why did the Roman Republic collapse?

What was your favorite illustration assignment?
Had a book deal to illustrate penguins. I love illustrating animals.
