Erin Vanessa

I’m a former video game producer and I’ve been drawing and painting for most of my life.
My inspirations include video games, Studio Ghibli, beautiful food, and vintage botanical illustrations.

Where do you live?
The Bay Area, California.

Where have you lived?
Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal (Canada).

What medium do you use?
I mostly use watercolour, with some gouache and coloured pencils.  I do a lot of my rendering and editing in Photoshop.

How do you stay inspired?
Playing video games, watching Studio Ghibli movies, cooking or baking, going for a nice slow run.

Where do you buy your art supplies?
When I’m in Canada, I go to Opus (my fave local store on the West Coast).  In America, usually Dick Blick.

Do you work traditionally or digitally?
Usually a little of both!

What color combination are you most excited about right now?
I’m really into orangey pinks with slate greys, beiges, and dark emerald green.

Why do you like being an illustrator in 15 words or less?
I get to express my truest self!

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
Maybe a dog walker.

What illustration job would you love to get (your dream job)?
A kids’ collection of home décor, toys, and maybe even matching apparel!  Or a recipe book.

Where would you like to travel to next?
I really, really want to visit the UK, or Japan!

What show have you binge-watched?
I have watched far too much of the Great British Baking Show.

What’s your favorite movie?
Princess Mononoke.

Who is your favorite cartoon character?
Does a video game character count?  My all time favourite is Yoshi from Super Mario (I have a tattoo of him on my ankle!)

What is your favorite cheese?
A super aged, sharp cheddar.

Do you wear shoes when you do art?
Nope, but sometimes I wear my slippers.

What do you listen to while you work?
Pretty much anything!

What’s your middle name?

How do you stay in shape?
Running and yoga.

How don’t you stay in shape?
Cinnamon buns.  So many cinnamon buns.

How do you take your coffee?
Black, unless it’s not very good, in which case I put in tons of cream and sugar!
