Kim Fleming

Growing up, my backyard was a forest. I would go exploring for hours and come back with muddy shoes and treasures of nature. I always loved to draw every little thing — ants in the peonies, my bicycle, twigs and leaves, and especially our cat. I guess that explains why I still love forests, and drawing every little thing. And cats.

Where do you live?
Providence, Rhode Island, USA, surrounded by trees, and with lots of deer who come to say hello.

Where have you lived?
Montreal, Canada; Portland, Oregon; Melbourne, Australia

What medium do you use?
A combo of original watercolor textures, hand-carved stamps (block prints) and digital magic.

How do you stay inspired?
I always try to keep learning, whether it’s new art techniques, the craft of writing, or ceramics! I also get really inspired by contemporary animated movies, and of course my peers in my Instagram feed.

Where do you buy your art supplies?
Locally at Jerry’s Artarama.

What color combination are you most excited about right now?
I’m loving peach/orange and olive green.

Why do you like being an illustrator in 15 words or less?
I get to create magical worlds that children can lose themselves in, and hopefully see themselves reflected in. (sorry, that’s 18 words)

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
A florist! I actually worked as a florist for a little while. I loved playing with the different colors and shapes, it’s a lot like creating a composition for an illustration (With the bonus that the flowers smell amazing.)

What illustration job would you love to get (your dream job)?
A series of board books starring cute animals.

Name something you do in your spare time.
I really love hiking, also travelling to new places, especially when that involves new places to eat.

Where would you like to travel to next?
Ooh, I’d love to go to Portugal. No, Turkey. Wait, Peru!!

What podcasts do you like?
Creative Pep talk by Andy J Pizza is one of my faves.

What show have you binge-watched?
Schitt’s Creek

I’m showing my vintage here, but I’ve always loved Calvin & Hobbes. Funny, but with a lot of heart.

What is your favorite cheese?
The one I can eat Right. Now.

If you could name a nail polish, what would you name it?
Raspberry beret.

Do you wear shoes when you do art?
I prefer bare beet whenever possible, but I wear slippers when it’s cold.

What do you listen to while you work?
Music (Soul/R&B, EDM, jazz depending on mood) or podcasts (art-related, or life-related). It all depends on what stage of the project I’m at.

What’s your middle name?
I don’t have one!

What do you wish your middle name was?
When I was eight I gave myself Maria as a middle name (after Maria on Sesame Street). I’ll still like it. Either that or Scarlet.

If you could eat only one food, what would it be?
Smoked salmon and cream cheese. Mmmmm… smoked salmon…

How do you stay in shape?
I do weights sometimes and cardio sometimes and try to take a walk in the sunshine whenever possible.

How don’t you stay in shape?
Wine, cheese and chocolate (in that order).

How do you take your coffee?
Milky and sugary.

Michelle Obama. She is the epitome of a cool, smart, strong BIPOC woman.

What was your favorite illustration assignment?
Illustrating the picture book “Mummy You’re Special To Me”.  Cute animal characters and various fun locations. Pretty much my dream project!
