Global Talent Search Semi-Finalists Announced! Did you make the top 50?
It’s time to reveal the 50 Semi-Finalists in the 2013 Global Talent Search!
We were flooded with entries in response to the exciting brief set in association with Paperchase, inviting entrants to design a journal cover with a playground theme. Here is what Lilla had to say about reviewing the submissions, and undertaking the difficult task of making the selection…
“What’s it like to review submissions from over 1,500 participants from over 30 countries around the globe? I’ll tell you what it’s like: It’s exhilarating! I couldn’t wait to see what would turn up as a result of the assignment. For starters, I was astounded by the quality of work and the calibre of the artists. Work was submitted in every medium: paint, watercolor, Adobe Illustrator, even 3-D pieces! My goal was to seek out the best of the best, and by a very careful process of elimination, I was able to narrow down the selection to 122 images. From there I began an even more studied (and challenging!) examination, and then finally I brought in my crack team, Susan McCabe and Jennifer Nelson, for their savvy input as seasoned agents to help narrow the work down to this group of AMAZING 50 semi-finalists.

congrats to all the semi-finalists! beautiful designs – totally want those journals!
All the finalists are really great…but all girls? Surely there were some men that had submitted great work? Even the prizes seem to favour women..this competition should have just been advertised for Women Illustrators ONLY.
Geoff – the finalists are not all women – there is a man in there, and this was not a consideration when making the decision on the semi-finalists
Congrats to all! Great work!
Well done to all the finalists, some great entries!
OMG…I am literally crying out loud of happiness since 10 minutes ago. I have no words to say how grateful I am and honored to be next to such an amazing and talented artist.
Lilla, you have no idea how much happiness and joy I am feeling right now!
Thanks everyone who is working on bringing us such joy to our life.
Lots of love and good luck to the next round.

Thanks you once again to Lilla and her team for putting on such a good show. I cant wait until October!
Many of the one’s selected look very similar to the sample art provided as inspiration. I guess my submission was way off course, it looked nothing like any of these… lol. Congrats to all!

This was a fun challenge! Thank you for the opportunity.
Out of curiosity, how many on the short list were also participating in the Make Art That Sells class?
Hi Emilie – A fair few were from the Make Art That Sells class but that is unsurprising really, given how much they learnt in class about icon and character development, color, presentation etc!
Hats off to every one of you! I will watch and learn!
Congrats to all the finalist, great work! Good luck in the next round!
These Journals are amazing! Congrats to everyone who entered for bringing such lovely work to the world. I can’t wait to see what happens next. Good luck in Round 2!

Guess I´ll have to take the MATS courses, seems like they all learned a lot.
Really feeling inspired by all the talent out there. Thank you for such a fun challenge!
Congratulations to all! Looking forward to seeing the next round, and to the MATS class! Cheers! Kim
Congratulations to all the top 50!
Lovely to see artists in there that I follow already.
Just a quick question for next time, do you have to take the Make Art That Sells course first?
Hi Sarah – this is answered in our FAQ – No you don’t, but it might help you! Make Art That Sells is designed to help you create more commercially viable art in exactly the markets that the Global Talent Search briefs are designed for. The course teaches you how to make exactly the kind of art that the Judging Panel and Lilla Rogers will be looking for, so if you have been thinking about taking the course we encourage you to do so in order to maximise your chances of success in the competition
Congrats to all the winners!!! Love seeing some of my classmates in the group!
High five to all who entered what seems to be a very good thing. But, as a browser, a newcomer, and a consumer, I am surprised by how simular they all are in style!
For example, an allover 60’s vintage pattern is cute, but is that really your bent, or is it what you think Lilla likes best?
I saw the way to stand out -after solid composition- was simply be unique- be more brave.
I like cute bears and foxes, the thin weight line was a nice playground equipment solution, but …Come ON, I want more of a choice in throw pillows or crib blankets for future grand kids!
What amazing work! Now for these 50 to do their next assignment which are then voted on by the impressive judges. They’ll toselect the 5 winners, plus the People’s Choice will select one more, for a total of 6 to go to the Finals. It’s exciting to see what these artists will do with the briefs they’re given. And we can’t wait to take on our next artist! Plus, so many artists are getting visibility that they deserve, winners or not. I bet they get some opportunities from this exposure, too. Yay art!
Roger and Heather, I really appreciate your critical, ‘different’ input here. While I don’t question the effort invested into each piece shown here, I had the exact same thoughts as you two. Unfortunately, your comments have not been addressed by the School…
Also, it would be nice to view all the other entries, not only the 50 semi-finalists, in order to determine what was less popular with the judges.
Soo much amazing and incredible.
