See top work from the Redrawing Black History course

Our artist Helen Dardik emigrated from Ukraine many years ago. She created this image in response to the invasion of Ukraine. It was immediately purchased and Helen donated all proceeds to Ukraine. You can find this piece and more on her Instagram page: @helen_dardik

As Black History Month ends, we wanted to highlight some of our artists’ pieces from my course, Redrawing Black History, that I taught with Tamisha Anthony over at Make Art That Sells. I was delighted that over 4,300 students took part in this important celebration of Black women artists.

A little bit about my time as an illustrator in NYC plus top editorial art by my artists

As an illustrator in New York, I shared a happily sawdust-laden and tin-ceilinged loft on Bond Street between Broadway and Lafayette with two nutty architects back in the 80’s and early 90’s.

Jeffrey got off of his stool and started playing ‘New York, New York’ on the little electric piano. “Stop working! Come sing with me!” he said.
“Jeffrey, I’m trying to draw stuff for the New York Times! Don’t you have an architectural rendering to do?”
“No, stop working and come sing. It’s only 8. Fedex comes at 9PM”
“Ok, you’re right.” And so it went.

One of my favorite things about being an illustrator was receiving a magazine manuscript by way of the latest technology–a facsimile machine. What a marvel of technology, I thought, as I eagerly watched the article scroll out of the fax on that shiny, curly paper.

Reading a manuscript and then coming up with concept in your own style is a beautiful thing. Today, I’d love to share with you a few of gorgeous, recent editorial illustrations by our artists.

Meet one of my newest artists on Zoom today at 12:00 PM ET. Link inside.

One of my favorite things is sharing my love of our newest artists with you on Zoom, where I gush over their art and get to know them better.
We’re excited to invite you to join us for the next in our series of WebinARTs with our artist Erin Vanessa, whose dreamy, translucent, lush watercolors captivate us. After taking a number of my classes and developing her children’s book illustration work, I knew she was ready for representation.

I’ll ask Erin all about her illustration technique, how she evolved her illustrations of people and kids, and how her former work as a video producer informs her work schedule. Come join us as I share her sumptuous work in a slideshow. Plus we’ll take a few questions live.
We can’t wait to see you there!
