JOB TITLE: Art Director, Children’s Books
REPORTS TO: Creative Director
JOB SUMMARY: The Art Director’s primary responsibility will be to follow creative vision for their assigned publishing list. The Art Director establishes and maintains ongoing communication with the Art, Editorial, and Production departments to ensure cost efficiency, timely execution, quality control and follow-through from design transmittal to bound books of assigned illustrated children’s titles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Oversees design and production of large and diverse children’s trade list. Works with agents and artists regarding proposed contract terms as designated by the Children’s Editorial Director and Creative Director. Coordinates with the Managing Editor on schedules and Production in order to meet deadlines in a cost and time efficient way.
Manages and/or designs covers or packaging for assigned titles when appropriate. Negotiates cost and timing with the artist’s representatives for the best product within budget and timeframe under the art director’s direction. Hires and supervises freelance designers and illustrators as needed. Maintains ongoing communication with Editors to insure timely execution and follow-through from manuscript to bound books. Establishes regular routing procedures for review of interior design and illustration by Creative Director and Editors.
Exercises fiscal responsibility in managing design and production of titles.
REQUIREMENT/QUALIFICATIONS:
4-year college degree preferably in Graphic Design, or equivalent work experience.
Minimum 5 years experience as an Art Director in interior and cover design for children’s trade books.
Experience managing, negotiating, and maintaining proper image usage rights.
Must have practical experience working with Royalty based illustrator contracts.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat) with competent knowledge of their application in book design and production.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
All applicants must possess a strong attention to detail and have proven abilities to problem solve.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.
JOB TITLE: Designer, Sterling Children’s Books
REPORTS TO: Senior Designer
JOB SUMMARY: The Designer primarily interacts with the Art, Editorial and Production departments. The Designer handles a portion of design, layout and production of several titles. The Designer has strong communication and time management skills, possesses a strong attention to detail and is able to work within a team structure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Handles the design and production of 10-15 titles per list including covers & interiors of established series, novelty titles and original book design.
Works closely with the Art Director and Senior Designer to maintain the highest quality of design and productions standards while keeping on track with deadlines.
Attend weekly status and design meetings. Maintains ongoing communications and schedules with the Editorial and Production departments to ensure timely execution and follow through from manuscript to bound book for all projects. Works closely with all members of the Art Department to increase productivity, communication, collaboration, design creativity and quality. Handles general support of the Sterling Children’s Books Art Department, including but not limited to art logs, art returns and routing.
REQUIREMENT/QUALIFICATIONS:
4-year college degree preferably in Graphic Design, or equivalent work experience.
Minimum 3 years design experience, preferably in Children’s book publishing.
A strong portfolio of original graphic design examples showing creative and appropriate use of typography with design ability ranging from traditional to contemporary to totally out-of-the box. Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, with knowledge of applications in book design and production.
Extensive knowledge of typography and book layout.
Detailed knowledge of pre-press requirements for print.
Experience in managing workflows and schedules.
Knowledge of the manufacturing process and proofing.
Strong time management skills and proven ability to multi-task.
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
