Lilla’s Tips to Artists

Lilla gives us a peak inside some of the advice and tips she shares with the Semi-Finalists for the Global Talent Search.

  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Show off what you do best. That’s what we want to see.
  • Ask yourself if this is a tin that you would love to give to a friend. Have fun with this! We’d love to see what you do in your style. Trust your taste level. Don’t “dumb down”.
  • Have fun! People buy your joy.
  • Rather than trying to guess what I’m looking for, do what makes you shine. You definitely do NOT need to do a style that you see on our site. We are looking for fresh talent.
  • Of course you’re nervous! That’s because you care. But remember that you got this far, and so you’ve got what it takes to do this assignment. It’s an easy one, with room for you to do what you love. Look over your existing work and see what you do best.

Free daily assignments to prepare for the Global Talent Search!

With the Global Talent Search just around the corner, Lilla has created a whole series of original mini assignments to help you get yourself prepared.

The assignments will be posted each day for 5 days, so check the Make Art That Sells blog and look out for #mygtsprep on our social media platforms!

This year’s assignments will be delivered in a slightly different format. All three assignments will evolve around the story of a fictional character: Antoinette from Brooklyn. By following a day in the life of the fabulous Antoinette, you’ll glean key information on an important demographic, and respond to the assignment with your end consumer in mind.

Flora Waycott’s Twitter Chat

Flora Waycott’s live Twitter Chat #MatsChats was full of useful advice and information for artists wanting to know more about how to prepare for a creative brief or contest.

She left us with a few points that summarize her advice on how to answer a creative brief:

1. Try to limit your research time and look in other places than online.

2. Ask the client lots of questions – don’t be afraid! They are usually so nice and helpful!

3. Don’t send your work until you are 100% happy with it – do your best work each time!

4. Social media – instagram, pinterest, blog…..clients will find you!

Flora shared with us a little bit about her creative process as well…

Brighton is so freaking charming

Hi,

Took a stroll in Brighton UK last night to get a taxi to Beth’s.

Everything is so freaking charming.

Here’s the Brighton Dome, where our big event is being held on Friday. A bit magical, a bit kooky.

IMG_0291

Is this a story book house or Beth’s house? Yup, it’s Beth’s.

IMG_0293

Pebble mosaic. I want to do this. Can Boston weather sustain this kind of thing?

IMG_0294

Beth’s belly. I made the bronze necklace for her.

IMG_0296

I lettered the name tags while we gabbed about the event. Yup, this is my career. I brought my fountain calligraphy pen and my travel watercolors.

I’m having my morning coffee downstairs. I’m loving this place.  Working on my Trend Report and Art Review PowerPoint for Friday.  #digitalnomad

Not often do you see a flyer for an accordion teacher.  I do love the serif lettering and the pencil drawing of the accordion.
