Sarah writes:
I’m in portrait/fan art mode! Been nibbling at this piece for a minute and finished last week. If you don’t know, Slick Woods @slickwoods is a dynamo, an artist, and a boundary breaker. Giving her the label of supermodel seems so narrow! Slick is a beam of bad a*s light! She’s changing the tired perception of what beauty is in the world and I’m here for it. She’s worked with Rihanna, Mark Jacobs, UGGS, Vogue and soooooo many others. Not only is she incredibly beautiful, she’s hilarious as well. Her one liners on @lauraperlongo Moms In Hot Tubs kill me. (Yes she’s also a mom) Slick your spirit speaks to me! I had to put my brush to the paper✨✨✨✨✨

It’s always a lovely surprise when I come across one of my illustrations unexpectedly. Spotted my little mouse puzzle in a gorgeous gift shop by the beach.

Live today 12 Noon ET!
I’m loving our WebinARTs over here at my agency Lilla Rogers Studio where, as you probably know, I interview our fascinating artists and we chat about their work and careers, most Thursdays.
As of this writing, I’ve done eight WebinARTS, and I’ve found that I enjoy them so much that we dreamed up “Live with Lilla”, where I’ll be interviewing artists, art directors, editors, and more, over at my school site, Make Art That Sells.
I’m thrilled that my very first Live with Lilla interview starts today with someone I’m crazy about, the QUEEN, Vanessa Brantley-Newton, beloved and highly-regarded author-illustrator of over 40 children’s books and diversity expert. We’ll chat about increasing diversity in our industry, what agents and art directors can do, and more.
Kim, I hope you’ll join me over on my Make Art That SellsFacebook page. It’s free and open to everyone, 12 noon ET today, July 20th.
Here’s the fabulous Vanessa Brantley-Newton with her newest book of poems for little girls, “Just Like Me”(Knopf/Random House). Available here.

We have a big announcement. PLUS: need a happy distraction? We’ve got a puzzle for you.

Recently, I chatted with our team over here in Boston. I asked, “How can we contribute? How can we make this time more interesting for our community? How can we promote our artists in a fresh way that our art directors will enjoy?” Then we came upon an idea.

We’re excited to announce our new public free series: Lilla’s WebinARTs, where each week I’ll chat with one of my artists on Zoom. They’ll discuss what it was like to work on a recent project, plus show some brand-new work.
I’ll ask my artists things like what their very favorite illustration project was and why, what makes a great art director, what color combination they are loving these days, tips on working from home, what they are reading right now, and more. I’m so excited that our very first WebinART will feature Mara Penny.

Social tips from the agents and books and games to keep you entertained

Wow. What crazy times these are! Hope you’re finding things to do to keep you happy.

Social tips from the Agents
I just got off a Skype with my fabulous agent colleagues Susan and Kim. I asked them what they are doing to get their social fix. Here’s their advice:
Susan’s Social Tip:
“Call a different person every night. Go down your list. It might be a neighbor, an old friend. Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time.”
Kim’s Social Tip:
“Make a virtual dinner date with a few friends or family. Set a time to FaceTime or Zoom, and enjoy your dinner and drinks together.”

Business learning for creative people
I’m absolutely blown away that over 9,000 people (as of this writing) have signed up for my MATS MBA (Money Bad Ass) course which co-founder Beth Kempton and I are now offering for free. We wanted to do something to help our community and this course felt very timely. It’s a robust course with videos and downloadables to help you both negotiate this phase and be ready with your big dreams when this has all passed, as it will. Read more here.
